Book Review: Ours Are The Streets

While roaming about in the market during Christmas, I came across a makeshift book stall in the market. So going by my nature, this can never happen if I can go past any book stall without noticing or grabbing any book. This time, it was 'Ours are the streets' written by 'Sanjeev Sahota'.

Ours are the streets was not a comfortable read and similarly is not easy to review. The book is written with first person perspective. The narrator, Imitiaz, is a Pakistan origin and born in Britain. The story revolves around how he becomes a religious person when he visits Pakistan after the death of his father. He was radicalised there to be a suicide bomber ( though author have not much elaborated the religious part). He keep on avoiding his wife, Rebekah. Much part of the story happens inside the mind of the narrator. The story also describes the difference of moral values between Pakistani origin and British people. Imitiaz 's parents want Rebekah to drop her child that was conceived before her marriage to Imitiaz.

I liked the way author has described the situations and the way he handles different characters while keeping the first person account. He has perfectly captured the mental and emotional thoughts inside the mind of a suicide bomber. The night before he is going to blow himself up, he tells everything to Rebekah. I liked the way how author ended the novel, when Imitiaz started running away from Rebekah and calling his (dead)father, Ammi to be his side. The writer keeps it to readers to guess what may have happen in the end. If Rebekah called the police , tells them everything or Did Imitiaz bombed himself as planned.

However , the way the writer narrated the story was rather complicated. It was difficult to figure who the narrator is addressing. One could only found out it at the first mention of the second person.
Also, it keeps changing suddenly.Sometime, he would be addressing his father and immediately it would change to his wife. Also, two stories run at time, one is the current story about him living in Britain with his wife, other one in which he went to Pakistan, met few persons, get influenced and come back with his cousin.

Above all, it was an engaging story, once started I could not stop to know what is going to happen next.

Khirki

The visit to a lesser known place is always a little more enthusiastic that a known place. Probably, the fact the we know something about the known place and have the privilege of some comfort. Last week, I was a part of walk group, which was organized as part of Delhi Walk festival. It was to walk in a lesser known place of Delhi, known as Satpula Lake Complex.

Satpula was a dam which was constructed in 14th century during Tughlak Dynasty and was part of fourth city of Delhi. It was basically used for harvesting and irrigation. The place was very peaceful and quieter than the outer world, given to the fact it is next to traffic cludded road and a mega mall Select City on the other side of the road.Apart from it, there was one newly constructed , but unused, amphitheater.

The walk group roamed about for some time then move forward to the Khirki extension nearby where there is an old mosque, which is known to be a one of its type in the north India.Roaming about in the narrow lanes of the Khirki extension, it felt like to be in another world. Some of the houses had only a cloth in the doorway serving as the main door.

I could not click any photos there as it was dark and my phone kept crying about battery.:(

Book Review: The Weary Generations

Few days ago, while wandering usually, I came across a book shop in Delhi that had put up a sale on old stock. As an admirer of books, I searched through it and got my hands on a novel based on India during 19th and 20th century when we were still under British rule.

The book 'The Weary Generations' is an English translation of an Urdu novel 'Udaas Naslein' written by Abdullah Hussein. It revolves around a character Naim, who after studying at Calcutta(Kalkutta), returns to his village Roshan Pur and helps his father in agriculture.Later during the WWI, he was
recruited into the army , where during his fight he lost his arm. After coming back to home, he was given a lot of land as bravery award from British Government. However he lost all of it when he was arrested and sent to gaol when he was working for congress for independence. He has a silent on and off relationship with his wife Azra.Naim silent listens to the his step brother Ali's adventures when they moving to other country after partition has been announced. On the way to new country, he is killed.

In the novel, I liked the way writer has explained his characters and all around environment in every event. One can truly imagine the things happening before the eyes with such an explanation. However, I felt for Alisha. There should have been more part for Ali,Rawal and Alisha. I don't know what happened to Alisha and how she died. There was nothing about Ali's second sting in Lahore.

Overall, I am happy about the book and after a long time I found a book that was overwhelming and had a good coverage of historical events during independence movement.

Nanak Shah Fakir

It feels good to see a movie based on a character whom we used to read while in school. However there were no valid proofs of various events of his life, apart from his writings. The person I am talking about here is Baba Nanak and movie is Nanak Shah Fakir, which is recently produced on the life and teachings of Baba Nanak. The task itself is a matter of courage and determination, making a film on the character for whom one is not allowed to portray it in human form.

Coming to the movie, I had a big expectations from this movie, because there is not much variety in Punjabi films as of now and this subject exactly stands out of the box till yesterday and moreover, I am big admirer(say fan) of Baba Nanak since my childhood.

First thing to be noticed is the thank you note to the Akal Takht. It is shown before the actual start of the movie and is written in both English and Punjabi. In Punjabi, there was a not a single word without mistake. All sihari/bihari were misplaced. That was a huge mistake I think and could have been noticed easily and  filtered without much efforts.

There are things which I definitely like about this movie is music which is very well produced with the help of mentor A.R.Rahman.The music while 'AARTI' was already buzzing in my mind since last few days. The 'Nanak Aaya' is my caller tune now.The songs are beautiful sung by Pt Jasraj.I have never heard classical singer with so enthusiasm earlier.

Coming to the other aspects of the movie, all the characters played well their part.Arif Zakaria did a great job playing as Bhai Mardana. One thing which left me amazing is how he transformed from childhood to young and old age.

The storyline of the movie was a bit distracting.I feel incompleteness when there were certain important events were left uncovered for example when Baba was on 3rd udasi, he was in Mecca and taught maulvi that keeping you feet in any direction while sleeping does not matter.Other being teaching the sadhus in Varanasi about how meaningless is offering water to sun.I do understand that such a huge and vast life story could not be completed in just 2 hours, but we could do make up for this by providing light on the events.

Next thing is about the lack of research. While since childhood I have revered Guru Nanak and What I had learnt from various books about him is that he used to live a simple life and was against any kind of karam-kaand and chamatkaar. One normal human being could not stop an almost 200kg heavy rock sliding from a sloping hill using a single hand, while this has been pictured in the movie.Which is beyond the teachings of Baba Nanak.one other instance was when he touch a person's face and it transforms instantly into a normal human face.earlier he had some disease marks all over his face and body and was pressured by society to live on outskirts.Another he was shown to do a chamatkaar by secreating blood from Malik Bhago's food and milk from Bhai Lalo's food.I don't say Baba Nanak may never have faced them. But he may have handled them another way. The person who preaches 'Kirat Karo, Wand chakko' cannot do against his own teachings.I am a bit disappointed with the Baba Nanak being depicted a doing chamatkaar.

The good thing is director has included the Langar tradition also how Baba Nanak started the Langar traiditon. Now I can surely say my friends whoever comes to me with a question why Langar?(mostly non-Punjabis come with this questions), I can redirect them to watch this movie.:)

The fire starts Burning !

I have been influenced with a new found hobby in me these days, to be a backpacker.
I am amazed how some people explore unknown places alone all through the world.
I am amazed with the new possibilities that remain unexplored while we keep on sitting at home almost doing nothing.
The first place that has totally blasted my mind, soul and heart is Jaisalmer. It is since I read a travelogue about Rajasthan few months back. The author has described beautifully how he spent his night in tent in desert where there was not any other single person to the view apart from the camp members.Since reading this I have been feeling ticklings inside my mind to feel the raw nature in the desert without any man-made resource influence.
Hopefully, soon I will be backpacking in this remote area and will definitely update my experience here.
Till then

Silent Morning!

This picture is taken from my apartment window just after the dawn. How pretty and silent the morning is.
We always keep busy ourselves in daily chores that we forgot to enjoy all bits of nature beauty.
I had just completed my night shift and came outside to relax and captured this morning silence.

Randomness and Laziness

I have been quite lazy in posting on this blog. Not that I am lazy in updating this blog, I am hell lot of lazy in my normal life also(not a good thing, I know). I have been facing quite randomness in my life since last few months. I may like something one day and next day, I get bored of it.There has been quite a lot a stories grown up like this in last few months.
I did like listening to music. At a time, few years back, I was so into music, that if I like a song, I would try memorizing the lyrics of the song by playing it for hours.
Now, my laziness hovers me.I don't listen to music. If I do listen, then it keep on moving itself.I lost track of what is being played.
During my college life, I do like reading books. If you ask me any question about any book that I read during that time, it is highly probably that I remember about it.
Now my book shelf is growing with unread books. If I do read any of book, I lost track of it next day what had happened there.
I have been quite struggling to come out of this thing.Hope I would be back on track and will start updating blog regularly.

High on The Highway - 2

After quite long time, I am writing this blog post. Incidentally I was reading my older posts few days back and was amazed by reading this old post written about 4 years back.High on highway.

Which was about two incidents happened in my life. One was while I was high on the highway under alcohol influence with one of my friend accompanying me, which the general discussion with him became the start of one of my wonderful phase of life as one another wonderful friend entered my life.  While the other was about some misunderstanding happened between that wonderful person and me which resulted into that wonderful friend being going away from me. So my motive was not to describe again those here! But to the write further about it.   The relation with that wonderful person really took a toll on me over these years and I really felt I am wandering with beer cans in my hand on the long highway of this life, sometime with wonderful  person along with  me or sometime all alone.

Life is like that highway only. You have to move lonely sometimes or sometimes someone may accompany you, But you don’t know which someone may put a permanent impressions over your heart, feelings and mind. While on the highway of life, nobody will walk permanently with you because we all have different highways. But these wonderful personalities may cut your path many times in your life only to make you feel that you can’t live without them and you can have them with you & you fall In love with them only to keep you waiting until they meet you again. You will always be in continue search of them when they will meet you again.
Life’s biggest mantra is to keep on walking the highway while waiting for those wonderful personalities to cut your path.Dont expect them to join your highway. Keep on waiting while walking so that may keep you inspired throughout your journey.

Happy Walking!

'Midnight Lover'

Chilled drizzle, wet roads, humid breeze, silent midnight and among all these nature’s romantic attributes, there he sat on an old-wooden bench under a small shed, with a skimpy smile on his face, with the thoughts about meeting his lover, that churned his heart out.

Hundreds of miles away from his lover, in wee hours of midnight, all he can do is dream about her, how she would be, how she would be looking, what she would be dreaming.

Remembering all the moments when they both were together, enjoying every second of being in love though they never expressed their love through words but only through eyes.

All through these years, he has always stood by her side. He never even thought of any mis-happening to her. It was all going smooth and simple but life is not just as smooth and simple. It has its own ups and downs. Heavens! some mis-happening happened. Suddenly they were apart. First physically, then mentally and finally emotionally. It seemed all the love has been lost. Now they both were apart. All he owns now is his wonderful past memories that he carried with him all the time.

His dream-series was contaminated by sudden heavy downpour, in that silent midnight. There was heavy noise of raindrops striking hard on the road just as a storm-stroke in his love-life, disturbing his smooth and simple love-life.

And, gathering up all her memories & dreams, he stood up and gets ready to face the storm.

Don’t be sad that it's over, be proud and happy that it happened.

Love !!

Girl Child, Boon or Bane ???

People in Rajasthan has found a new way to kill the girl child . Now they do not feed the girl child properly , the don't provide any medical help required. The child itself dies after some time when it does not get proper care.
I bet this is not happening only in Rajasthan but all areas affected with female foeticide.
After knowing all these things, I realise, where are we exaclty heading to ?
where are we progressing to?
This makes a very big question mark to our development. Why are we trying to measure our development with male-population. Can we survive with out females?
In older times, people used to refer girls as Godess lakshmi(godess of wealth) and it was a belief  that if we disrespect the girl child , the evil would hover our lives and will affect our financial conditions. Perhaps, this is the reason behind financial downturn of India. The big question is why we don't want girls to be born?
Due to dowry??
If dowry is the reason behind it , then i do a  commintment to never accept any dowry in any form.
Or
Is it due to egoistic nautre if our society that they think that there sisters, daughters might spoil their name by marrying the person of her choice.
Finally , to strongly curb this , young generation must come forward , because govts will do nothing expect passing the acts that do nothing good.

In the end, i will recite Guru Nanak dev 's written rhyme that says 'Why you say bad about those  who gives birth to Kings?

Gujar jaye kisi ki yaadon mein to kya gam hai?

hey guys i just wrote a poem today...
pls read it and comment...

rabb na kare ke ye jindagi yu hi gujar jaye...
gujar jaye kisi ki yaadon mein to kya gam hai?

gam ki dhoop mein tadap raha hai yeh dil,
ek lamha muskan teri pe fida hai yeh dil,
tanhaian nahi sehta, rone ko karta mera man hai,
rabb na kare ke ye jindagi yu hi gujar jaye...
gujar jaye kisi ki yaadon mein to kya gam hai?

tere saath chalte hota hai mehsoos kya,
jitna bhi karoon shor hota nahi byan,
tere bina jine ki tammana abb kam hai,
rabb na kare ke ye jindagi yu hi gujar jaye...
gujar jaye kisi ki yaadon mein to kya gam hai?

tere mere bare mein log ab batein karte hain,
tera naam lekar mujh par hansa karte hain,
tu na bole to ankhen bhi yeh hoti nam hain.
rabb na kare ke ye jindagi yu hi gujar jaye...
gujar jaye kisi ki yaadon mein to kya gam hai?

naraaj hokar kabhi humse door mat jana,
shikwa shikayat ho agar to hamein hi batana,
jaroorat kabhi pade to hazir teri gali mein 'charan' hain,
rabb na kare ke ye jindagi yu hi gujar jaye...
gujar jaye kisi ki yaadon mein to kya gam hai?

rabb na kare ke ye jindagi yu hi gujar jaye...
gujar jaye kisi ki yaadon mein to kya gam hai?
